|You and Your Hairdresser |

Your relationship with your hairdresser is an important one, the only thing preventing them from turning you into something resembling a fluffy poodle is good communication and trust.

Choosing a new hairdresser can be a daunting and stressful experience, especially if your hair is hard to manage or you are searching for a new style. Ask your friends for recommendations, especially if they have similar taste.

Book in for a non permanent procedure such as a blow dry so you can assess the hairdresser's abilities and look at other clients hair in the salon. If a salon is always busy it is a good indicator that they produce a high standard of work.

Xarni Riggs is the owner of Global Salon in Paddington and her advice is to, "Take a few pictures of things you like for both the colour and cut. It's better to tell a hairdresser what you want / like than to tell them things you don't want. It keeps the dialogue open and positive, making it easier to come up with options and a place to move forward to."

If you are unsure of anything, Xarni says "Don't be afraid to ask your hairdresser questions, we love them - it helps us understand your level of knowledge on haircare and therefore able to prescribe the best products for you."

There is no point requesting a hairstyle that isn't suitable for your hairtype, this will make you unhappy with your new hairdresser and you may end up feeling resentful. A successful new hairstyle not only means you leave the salon with a smile on your face, but can recreate it at home.

Xarni says "Home care is really important to ensure you can replicate the style and blow-dry with ease. Purchasing the products on the day will make it life easier simply because its fresh in your mind . Get the hairdresser to write down the instructions in the way they put them in your hair"

Communicating with your hairdresser is a two way street, don't be afraid to be upfront about what you want, while still listening to their advice.
