the vampires of today

Why are Vampires such a popular fictional character, when they are an enemy of the human race with a thirst for the very thing that sustains us...our blood?

Over time, vampires have evolved from demonic, batlike creatures into pale, gaunt and sexual beings. In books and movies we see the lead, often male vampire as tall, dark and handsome...the bad boy who is different to the rest of his species and always gets the human girl.

The appeal must be to do with the quiet, brooding man who can offer ultimate protection and loyalty. Vampires are shown to be hundreds of years old, with wisdom, maturity and dark experiences women haven’t quite seen before.

Since the 18th century we have seen books with Vampiric characters, Bram Stoker’s Dracula which was later made into a movie, first appeared in paper form in 1897. Anne Rice had huge success with her Vampire Chronicles between 1976 and 2003.

Books have taken a turn by adding a dose of humour and seduction with titles such as Undead and Unwed by Mary Janice Davidson making dating Vampire’s modern and chick.

Movies like the teen sensation Twilight, show vampires living a regular life and even going to high school. Although mild in comparison to other paranormal thrillers, it brings the Vampire trend to a different audience. Twilight is a damaging love story between Bella and Edward but the drinking of blood and traditional Vampire references such as coffins and daylight are a rarity.

True Blood is taking television by storm with a more graphic look at vampires, and follows the chemistry between vampire Bill and Sookie Stackhouse in a place where Vampires have legal rights. The tagline for the show is appropriately “Thou Shall Not Crave Thy Neighbour”.

Because the world just can’t seem to get enough of Vampires, the popular book series The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith is also being made into a television series. The story revolves around a girl who is torn between two Vampire brothers, one good and one evil.

So whatever the reason, the Vampire craze is here to stay and you can expect to see more boundaries being pushed, both in writing and on our screens.
