Meet Marissa, Creator of theBALM

Hi Marissa (and Wheezie), let me start by saying thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Hi Anna! Thank YOU. We’re happy to do it! ?

-How did theBalm start?

It’s true what they say. Find a job you love, and you’ll never work again.

I worked in television for a number of years and was unfulfilled—I wanted more. I wanted a job that offered endless creative opportunity doing something I loved. Despite not knowing a thing about the cosmetics industry, I decided to create my own makeup line. I bought a dozen books on how to make makeup and went crazy. I spent all my free time and savings perfecting kitchen concoctions and doing whatever I needed to get my business running.

-Did you face any difficulties?

Sure. It’s Murphy’s law. If there was something that could go wrong, it would. But I never let tough times get in my way of going for the gold because the only choice I had was to make things better. So that’s what I did, and today I’m more than happy with the outcome.

-Where did you come up with the name?

Originally, all of theBalm’s products were beeswax-based; hence the name “theBalm.” And like our fun product names, theBalm, was a play on words that identified us as a brand—sexy, unpredictable and da’ bomb!

-What was your first product?

In 2000, I made my first Plump your Pucker glosses in Berry my Treasure and Pepper my Mint.

-Who is Wheezie? Is she a real dog?

She’s a real dog. Wheezie is theBalm’s CPO (Chief Pet Officer) and my posh pug pooch. Wheezie’s a girly girl, and wherever anything fabulous is concerned, she’s there!

-What is your favourite product?

That’s an impossible question. . .all theBalm products are my favorite. When something does exactly what it says it will do AND makes you look fabulous, I’m a fan for life!

-What are your best sellers?

That’s a toss up; theBalm’s best sellers are our Plump your Pucker tinted glosses, Stainiac and timeBalm—totally purseworthy!

-What’s next for theBalm?

Premiering soon are new Stainiac shades and Balm Shelter, our new tinted
SPF-gloss.

-What does being a woman mean to you?

To me, being a woman means being beautiful inside and out. Beauty is being kind to others, loving your pet, excelling at what you’re good at, not being afraid to order dessert, maintaining positive friendships and relationships and looking DAMN FINE while doing it!
