the return of the thank you note |
They disappeared and seemed destined to be filed away with the obsolete and unfashionable; shoved into the ‘no longer needed’ cupboard along with relics such as music cassettes, bubble skirts and washing boards. But according to paper specialists Enchanted Envelope, the hand-written thank you note has made a comeback.
“In a time dominated by email and texting, it’s such a great thing to see,” said Enchanted Envelope Buyer Sarsha Bucak, who has seen a surge in thank you note purchases and is currently looking internationally to add more individual designs to the range.
“I think that people today are desperate to find personal ways to communicate and really show people they are genuine, so they are using the hand-written note as a gesture of sincere thanks.
“They take a little time but they make such a huge impression on the receiver. The act of sitting down with pen in hand and writing a thoughtful note of gratitude normally yields a special message.

“And this is great timing, because Summer is a time of transition: weddings, graduations, job interviews, and that means it's also a season for ‘thank yous’.“
These days, Ms Bucak said notes of thanks are being written for gifts, dinners or parties, job interviews and special acts of kindness between friends.
She advises investing in simple note cards, not sheets of stationery.
“Full sheets of paper are usually more formal so they’re not as suitable for expressing thanks to friends and colleagues.
“And steer away from pre-printed thank you cards with messages – it’s tempting just to sign your name at the bottom and be done with it. “

Thank you notes should be written in a timely manner, ideally within a few days of receiving the gift or assistance.
“Write the note as soon as you can. A good thankyou note should acknowledge the generosity of the giver, and also refer to the gift or act of kindness and explain how it impacted your life. Be enthusiastic but don’t gush or you risk insincerity.
“I recommend keeping notes short, sweet and special – save conversations about other matters for the phone.”
Encouraging the act of writing thank you notes from an early age is also a great way for parent to instil a good habit in their children, said Ms Bucak.
“Thank you notes promote good manners and help build social skills and creative writing. We have actually introduced thank you notes that match the design of our children’s birthday invitations because this idea is certainly becoming more popular.”
