interview: kate miller-heidke

Nearly a year since the release of her debut album 'Little Eve', Kate Miller-Heidke is one of the most talked about performers in Australian music. Heralded as one of the ultimate acts to catch live, rarely has an artist left fans and reviewers alike so consistently awestruck.

Kate is currently selling out national tours, and supporting the likes of Cyndi Lauper and Evermore, as well as being a major festival draw card (East Coast Blues and Roots, Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, Woodford).

This month we asked the quirky Kate to answer a few questions for us:

B&L: Have you always wanted to be a singer?

Kate: Yes, since I was about 10 years old.   'The Sound of Music' was my favourite movie as a child.

B&L: How did you get started?

Kate: I started writing songs as an angsty 14-year old.  I would play them to anyone who'd listen.  My first public gigs were in Brisbane bars,  they were mostly band competitions where the prize was a few jugs of VB.

I started doing more and more shows, meeting more and more musicians...one thing led to another…it's a long story.

B&L: How would you describe your album "Little Eve"

Kate: Melodic; lyrical; vocally-driven; theatrical; personal; other.  It's hard for me to describe it.

B&L: Where does the name Little Eve come from?

Kate: It is a reference to a song on the album called 'Little Adam', which is a song written from the perspective of God.  It features God berating humans for all the mistakes they have made (not a religious way, in a metaphorical way).

I liked the Adam and Eve reference because it conjures up all sorts of things about what it means to be human, and naive.  That is a running theme through the album.

B&L: Your sound is so unique, what would you attribute that to?

Kate: Thank you.  I suppose, like everyone else, I have a unique set of influences and they seep into my music.  My background in classical music and love of music theatre probably plays a part.

B&L: You seem like a fun and bubbly girl, how do you like to spend your spare time?

Kate: Fun and bubbly!? It's all a facade (smiles).

I like to spend my spare time travelling, reading, writing, watching HBO TV series, and being with friends.  90% of my life is somehow related to music.  It's nice to spend the other 10% doing something else, walking around a cemetery or something!

B&L: What are you currently working on?

Kate: Album #2.  My creative collaborator Keir Nuttall has set up a rudimentary home studio for us.  We have been demo-ing new songs.

B&L: What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?

Kate: Probably the fact that my music doesn't get played on the radio.  'Little Eve' doesn't really fit any established radio 'format'.

But despite that, people seem to have discovered my music anyway, and mostly I have a great life.  In some ways the biggest challenge is making sure I don't take any of this for granted.

B&L: How would you describe your fashion style?

Kate: Small waist, big skirt, bright colours!

B&L: What is one think we wouldn't know about you?

Kate: I love the smell of cow dung!

B&L: What do you love most about touring?

Kate: Getting to connect with people through music every night.
