girls in trucks

By Katie Crouch

ISBN: 978-0-7475-9351-5

In Charleston, South Carolina, manners mean everything: the pristine young ladies of the Camellia Society must learn the rules of old-fashioned southern gentility as well as the complicated steps of the cha-cha and the lindy hop.

Among these girls in their white cotton gloves is Sarah Walters. A reluctant debutante, she has ragged fingernails and a taste for swigging beer with farmers in the backs of trucks. But nice Charleston girls obey their mothers, and along with her friends Charlotte, Bitsy and Annie, she must maintain the illusion of demure charm.

As Sarah grows older, moving north and navigating love and life in New York, she and her group of displaced deb sisters try to redefine themselves within the harsh realities of modern life. But careers don’t always go to plan, and men don’t always love you back. And when a shocking event brings thirty-something Sarah back home to Charleston, she must decide where home really is.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Sarah is an interesting character, she isn’t entirely lovable but her faults and insecurities make her appealing to the reader. I did find this book a little confusing at times, it seemed to skip over a few chunks of her life which I would have liked to know more about.

Even though Sarah is brought up to be a “good little girl” she doesn’t quite turn out that way. She goes through a range of different relationships but there is always something missing and goes back to being alone.

Her group of school friends are always there for her, even though the only thing they have in common is their past.

I liked Girls in Trucks, it is different and it is fascinating to see Sarah grow into a strong, independent woman. At times this book is quite sad due to unexpected tragedies but it does have a touch of humour as well.

Girls in Trucks is available from all good stores,
RRP: $29.95
