One of the most common complaints I hear from my clients
is that they don’t feel stylish, and they want to. They look
at other people and think – that person is stylish –
but when they try on those clothes, they don’t feel comfortable
because it doesn’t suit their individual personality, colouring,
body shape or proportions. So how do you find your individual style?
Start off by thinking about words you’d like associated with
you, for example you may wish to look professional, reliable and
efficient, or alternatively you may want to look friendly, warm
and caring, or how about creative, dramatic and charismatic. There
are so many different words people use to describe themselves, or
would like people to believe that’s what they are –
so why not think about and write down a few words that are important
to you – how would you like others to perceive you?
Now that you’ve got a few words, trying looking through magazines,
catalogues, the internet or any other place you see pictures of
people with clothes on – think about your words – any
time you see a picture that represents these words, pull out the
picture and place it in a scrap book or file, take a look at these
pictures and look at each element of the clothing and hairstyle
– what is it that appeals to you – colour, style, shape,
or clothing detail.
Write down these elements, internalise these
styles, and look at clothes in a new light – whenever you’re
getting dressed think – does this outfit make me think of
my particular words, if not, what is it that’s different and
how can I change the outfit so it better reflects me and my personal
style.
Why not type up your list of words, print them out and attach them
to your mirror or wardrobe door, so whenever you’re getting
ready to go out into the world you can think to yourself –
does this suit me? Is it my style?
Keep in mind your personality, if you’re a wash-and-wear
hair kind of person, then aspiring to a hairstyle that takes 15
minutes of blow drying or straightening each day is unrealistic,
you may be able to keep the look up for a week or two, but it won’t
work for you in the long run. If you hate high-heeled shoes, then
there is no point in trying to wear them, but do seriously consider
how you can get a similar look, with a little more comfort, without
sacrificing all the elements of style.
Still need help? Why not consider having a personal image consultation
and define your personal style, you’ll discover why some of
the clothes in your wardrobe are never worn – even if they
fit you, and you’ll save yourself money as you stop buying
garments that will never work for you.
