We had Napoleon Perdis National Core Creative team member and makeup artist Anna Papadopoulos answer some makeup questions for us. These are fantastic tips which every bride to be should read!

What should I look for when choosing a Makeup Artist for my big day?

Choosing a Makeup Artist for your big day is important! Choosing someone who is a qualified Makeup Artist, and has the knowledge and experience with wedding makeup is essential.

It’s a good idea to ask others that have seen the makeup artists’ work, and take a look at their portfolio – look at other weddings that they have done. Ask the makeup artist what products they use, and are they of a high quality? This is usually a good indication of professionalism.

Also, you should feel comfortable with the makeup artist. You will need to really work with them to establish the desired look you want, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good makeup artist will provide excellent customer service, and ensure quality and satisfaction to the highest of standards.

Do I need to match my bridesmaids?

In general, the bridal party should look complimentary all together. It is up to the bride since it’s her special day. There may be a theme but it’s usually best to work with the bridesmaid’s dress colours and bring out the individual’s best features.

If there is a certain makeup look or colours that the bride wishes to have for her bridesmaids, that’s ok. Personalising the makeup look to each bridesmaid is best.

What colours do you recommend?

Light and natural colours are best, with a little bit of smokey definition (if desired). Try not to go too trendy with colours on the wedding day. Also don’t try colours that you’ve never worn before.

You don’t want to change the person you are. Think of peaches, pinks and gold hues for the cheeks – these are colours which give a healthy radiant glow. Some colours that work best on the eyes are soft browns, golds, peaches, pinks and greys. If the bride wants more definition, go for a brown or black eyeliner around the lash line to really define the eyes and eye colour.

Always play up your best feature. If you wish to keep the eyes fresh and simple, you may want to play up the lips by using a bold colour, and have this as the focus feature.

Most brides tend to play up their eyes, and keep the lips soft and glossy – in shades of pinks or apricots. Avoid going too glossy or sticky on the lips, as you must keep in mind that the bride will be kissing her future husband at the alter, and a lot of wedding guests too!

Should I be looking for anything specific for photographs?

One thing to get right is having a foundation that’s a true match to your skin colour, and make sure it’s well blended into the neck and decollatage. There should be no colour changes from face to neck. It should look beautifully flawless.

Another product to look for is an appropriate touch-up compact powder that does not contain SPF in it. SPF can reflect the flash of the camera and cause faces to appear lighter than they actually are. Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish is a great choice for a compact powder.

Is it possible for me to do my own makeup for the day?

Yes, this is possible. Be sure you are really confident on doing your own makeup for your special day – and that you can achieve the flawless look that you desire. If you opt to do it yourself, ensure that you buy high quality products that will give you the best results.

If you would like to do your own makeup for your wedding day and are not very confident, an option is to visit a Napoleon Perdis environment where a makeup expert can give you a one-to-one personalised consultation to empower you with the knowledge and application tips you need to get it perfect on the day!

Do I need to reapply during the day?

It is essential to have touch-ups throughout your wedding day. Touch-ups will be needed for photo opportunities to ensure everyone remains looking flawless.

If your make-up has been applied correctly, the whole look should not need to be touched up.

Touch-ups may be needed on:

The eyes – if there has been tears
The face – if there is any shine on the nose and cheeks
The lips – if you have eaten, or it has worn off through the day

It is a good idea to take a little makeup kit with you in your purse that consists of a compact powder, lipstick or gloss, cotton tips and some tissues.
