This little book reviewer is back in fang heaven. It’s been a while since I had something I could really sink my fangs into so when this book came across my path I started salivating with anticipation. And I must say that I certainly was not disappointed.

Bree Tanner plays a very minor role in the Twilight series with a 9 page part in Eclipse who just happened to take on a life of her own in the mind of author Stephanie Meyer, which is explained in the introduction to this novella. I love the fact that we learn how and why Bree came to have her story told. Way too long to be a short story but not quite meaty enough for a novel this really is the perfect vampire brunch.

The Twilight series has introduced us to a civilised vampire existence with the Cullens, who manage to live quite a human seeming life. The experiences of Bree Tanner as a vampire are about as far from the Cullens way of life as is possible. Through the eyes of Bree you will see the savagery and bloodlust experienced by newborn vampires when they are not nurtured, taught and cared for in the way the Cullens expand their family.

In the Eclipse novel we only glimpse Bree for a moment, here we get to know her and experience life as a newborn vampire with her. Having read the Twilight series I had glimpsed Bree, but I think even a Twilight virgin would enjoy this slice of vampire life. Mixed in with the savagery and thirst you see the signs of emotional connections and potential romances prevalent in the Twilight series.

Yet again we are left with unanswered questions that could lead to more installments from the world of Twilight, or leave you to create your own endings for some of the characters you will meet here.

Overall this is the opposite end of the spectrum from the vampires you meet in Twilight, contrasting the romanticised vampires of the modern era with the violent savagery of the early vampire myths. Still it is a blood fuelled snack that will leave you hungering for more while still satisfying your fangy cravings.
