Well let me start by saying if you let the title dissuade you from picking up this book you will be missing out on a worthwhile read. If you are looking for something to sink your mind into, rather than just your teeth, then this is a book for you.
Written by a philosopher about a psychologist it will certainly give your vocabulary muscles a work out. Not the type of book you can fall in bed and immerse yourself in half asleep but worth the effort. Whether you are a believer or not this is an engaging and thought provoking read that will have you chewing over the arguments long after you have put down the book.
The story of one tumultuous week, spanning the memories and experiences of two decades, in the life of Cass Seltzer. Bringing us into contact with all the major players in the journey that has culminated in a best seller and left Cass feeling that he has landed in someone else’s life. Looking back through the years at the events and people who have shaped the man he has become and ideals he has fostered. Demonstrating some of his arguments at work in everyday life we see the effect our choices have on others, and the effects others can have on our choices.
We are given a look at the inner workings of the religious background of his forefathers, which were unpracticed in his childhood. But, that’s not to say that this is a cover to cover editorial on religion in the modern era, or its evolution over the centuries. This is the tale of one man’s journey to success in his field, with all the heartbreak and obstacles he had to overcome on the journey.
I was very skeptical at the outset, to say the least, about whether I would even manage to make it through to the end of the book. Not only did I make it through, I thoroughly enjoyed the read and have found myself still thinking about it.

You’re right, I would never have picked up this book, given it’s title. Now I will at least thumb through a few pages before making up my mind. It sounds pretty heavy going but that’s what cold, rainy wintry weekends are for, yes?
