tips for at home hair colouring

It might seem straightforward, but dying your own hair can have its own complications. While we generally recommend a trip to the hairdresser, home hair colouring kits can give your hair a refresh if you are on a tight budget.

Unless you are extremely confident and have someone to help you, avoid using at home streaking kits. These can be difficult to manage and in most cases streaking is best left to the professionals.

When colouring your hair at home, make sure to read the instructions carefully. Allergies and unusual reactions can occur, so do a strand test in advance.

If your hair is excessively damaged then it is best to avoid do it yourself kits. Your hairdresser will be able to set you on a treatment plan to get your hair in top condition again.

Going blonde at home can have problems, and if you have dark hair there is a good chance it will go orange. If you have blonde hair and want to go dark, choose a shade with red in it to avoid it turning a nasty green colour.

Always read the instructions carefully and wear the gloves which are included. It is also a good idea to wear an old towel around your neck to avoid ruining your clothes. Splatters can occur so it’s a good idea to place some plastic or newspaper around your bathroom.

To keep track of time use an alarm clock or timer, this will give you an accurate measure and remind you when its time to rinse!

If you have extra long or thick hair it is likely you will need two packs. It is better to have too much than too little because there is nothing worse than a splotchy dye job.

For permanent hair colour, apply barrier cream or Vaseline to your hairline to avoid staining. Most stains disappear after a few days but if you have to go out in public then prevention is better than cure. Use the conditioner that comes in the pack, it is designed to lock in the colour and moisturise your hair.

Don’t forget any spots, your hairline and part are important and the underneath is often forgotten.

Good luck and enjoy your new hair colour!
